Welcome to the Ensemble Español’s Flamenco Passion Festival!
We are entering our 48th season as we once again feature our full Company and our distinguished guests from Spain in this exciting weekend of dance.
Behind the glamor is the year-round work of The Ensemble Español that is focused in educational excellence, heritage, and cultural opportunity for youth. We perform and serve 2,700 school children annually in Chicago. We support a Youth Company that will perform in New Mexico later this month!
Next week at Northeastern Illinois University the Ensemble is presenting a Symposium (Live and by Zoom) that will host nationally known journalists on issues in the arts and media coverage along with over 90+ Spanish dance and music classes in the Flamenco, Escuela Bolera and Classical styles led by our esteemed guest artists.
Our passion and hard work are supported by so many constituencies. We thank our amazing Board of Directors, all of our donors, and our public and private funding sources.
To continue our work, we need you! Please join us on this journey. Explore what the Ensemble Español is accomplishing and use this link to make a contribution.
On behalf of the entire Company, the dancers, the Board of Directors, and all of the staff, we offer a heartfelt thank you!

Raquel Gómez created this work that reaches back to the traditions of the Escuela Bolera (classical Spanish style) from the 18th Century, as it simultaneously embraces contemporary Flamenco music. Set to acclaimed composer David Peña Dorantes’ and percussionist Javier Saume-Mazzei, Sur, or Gomez’ vision crafted a new work that joins the bright and classical movements of the Escuela Bolera to the lively, passionate jazzy rhythms of Dorantes’ Flamenco composition, and establishes the next stage of these two styles in our shared artistic experience. The importance of this endeavor is best expressed by Gomez, who states:

"My inspiration when putting together this choreography was the great teacher and dancer Antonio Ruiz. Antonio was one of the first major artists to implement classical ballet in Spanish dance companies. This style and choreography requires great technical experience and artistry of classical ballet. My second inspiration was Ensemble Español’s beautiful and elegant choreography, Seguidillas, performed by Dame Libby Komaiko. The work was set in 1977 by former artistic director of the National Ballet of Spain, Nana Lorca, to the Spanish zarzuela (light opera) music of El Niño Judío by Pablo Luna" - Raquel Gómez

Maestro Juanjo created twenty five works for the full company from 1984 through 2000. As Spain’s foremost authority on folklore, Juanjo’s detail to the style, customs and celebration of the people of each region in Spain made him the legendary master on this art form. Tonight the Ensemble Español honors his legacy by presenting excerpts from the regions of Galicia, Extremadura, and Valencia. Irma Suárez Ruiz & Jorge Pérez have both performed and been a part of Juanjo’s works with the Ensemble Español since his first residency to Chicago in 1984.

This work, in the Flamenco Guajiras palo/style dance, is based on the sung genre of Cuban music, a poetic art with music. A guajira is simply a song for voice and guitar with a series of similar letras. It became popular in the western and central regions of Cuba in the 17th century, and consolidated as a genre in the 18th century. It has Andalusian and Canary Islands origins, and it integrated African elements in Cuba. The flamenco guajira is the adaptation to Melos flamenco of the Cuban point, the peasant point, a genre that brings together a series of songs called Guajiros that are grown in the rural areas of the island of Cuba.

“Choreographing my creation 'Viejos Aires' on the Ensemble Español dancers represented a personal reunion with the repertoire of my own dance company. ‘Viejos Aires’ is a choreography that has given me numerous successes throughout its presentation and performances in the best theaters around the world. Irma and Jorge’s invitation to set this work on the Ensemble Español as part of their extensive repertoire was exciting. I wanted to merge two very different styles in terms of technical elements: Argentinean tango and Spanish dance, including my own personal style. In Ensemble Español, I clearly saw a company with great desire and enthusiasm to assimilate, face and interpret this complex work. ‘Viejos Aires,’ from my point of view, is a timeless passionate choreography that speaks from the heart to the heart. ¡Felicidades y gracias!" - Antonio Najarro

A Chicagoan since birth, Katrina “Katie” Bartels has been dancing since she was a toddler. She began ballet from 2-6 years of age with Chicago Ballet Arts. She was a delightful addition to “May I Have This Dance?” during middle school at St. Matthias. Katie quit Girl Scouts and began dancing flamenco at age 11 with the Ensemble Español community workshop classes, (with the help of her big brother, Teo, who danced with the youth company for four years).
In 2012, she saw “Bolero” performed at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts and the purpose of her life was forever altered by that magical experience. The next year, she was accepted into the junior division of the Ensemble Español Youth Company, which was taught by Sara Samuels (and later by Crystal Ruiz and Monica Saucedo).
Katie was in the junior division for three and a half years before she made it to the senior division of the youth company, under the guidance of Julia Hinojosa and Jose Torres. Katie danced with the España Club (founded by Carlos Alverio, former EE dancer) until her graduation from Lane Tech in 2019. She performed with the senior division for four and a half years. During this time, she also participated in the After School Matters Spanish dance experience for four Summers before her promotion to apprentice with the Ensemble Español in the Fall of 2021.
During this time, Katie is honored to have worked with the Founder of Ensemble Español, Dame Libby Komaiko, as well as such prestigious dancers as José Barrios, Carmela Greco, Paloma Gomez, Claudia Pizarro-Saume and Carlos Rodríguez.
